Sonequa Martin-Green

You know Sonequa Martin-Green from television and film as she boldly overcomes unthinkable situations set against very challenging backgrounds. She was Sasha Williams in AMC’s The Walking Dead. She also gallantly led her crew as Captain Michael Burnham, on Paramountᐩ’s Star Trek : Discovery

On the big screen you can catch her as Kamiyah James on Space Jam : Legacy. Or watch her as Merit, starring opposite Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris on the feature film, My Dead Friend Zoe

Sonequa is a true luminary of the big screen and small screen alike. We are beyond excited to congratulate her on two more of her incredible upcoming projects.

The first one – she will be starring opposite Donnie Wahlberg in the new CBS TV series, Boston Blue. Which is a spinoff of the long running TV show Blue Bloods. The second one is the Amazon MGM drama, Sarah’s Oil, where she will be playing opposite fellow Imagined Lifer, and real life husband, Kenric Green.

The Acting Studio for the Barrier Breakers

Sonequa is no stranger to playing strong women. Women who continuously overcome insurmountable battles.

This was most exemplary when she played Captain Michael Burnham, on Paramountᐩ’s Star Trek : Discovery. Sonequa broke barriers and made history as the first African-American woman captain to lead a Star Trek crew, and the first African-American female lead in the series as well. This great honor was not met with fanfare by everyone alike.

Of which she says. “Yeah, there is pressure, I certainly felt a lot of pressure when I started because I just wanted so desperately to do the story justice, and to do the franchise justice and to do my community justice. It makes you just sort of just look to yourself like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to do this and I’ve got to do that.’ There’s a lot of ‘I’s’ in there and…there’s no ‘I’ in legacy.”

Sonequa goes boldly and as she shoulders her artistic responsibility, she stays anchored to her daily creative practice. This is the place where she finds her I AM through the WE ARE. Through her years of work with Diana, she has learned this truth. She fully immerses herself in what Diana calls “hooking her ambition to her mission” to empathically accept, excavate and express the ever expansive truths of the human condition.

Sonequa has gained access to the duality of her strength and vulnerability. In doing so, the range of stories she shares are endless. From the ethers of space to the throes of an apocalyptic zombie ridden world, she is grounded, complex and always enthralling to watch. Sonequa is the stuff of legends.
